Screen where my business may owe sales tax
Maps sales by state against economic and physical nexus factors and lists the questions to resolve with a tax advisor.
The prompt
Help me screen where a business may have sales tax obligations in the US.
What we sell: [products/services - note digital goods, SaaS, services, shipping]
Sales by state, last 12 months: [PASTE - revenue and number of transactions per state]
Physical presence: [offices, employees or contractors, inventory (including in marketplace warehouses), trade shows]
Sales channels: [own website / Amazon / Etsy / wholesale / other marketplaces]
Where we're registered now: [STATES]
Steps:
1. For each state, compare our sales and transaction counts to that state's economic nexus threshold. Do not state thresholds from memory as fact - list them as [VERIFY THRESHOLD] with the figure you believe applies.
2. Note physical nexus triggers from what I listed.
3. Note where marketplace facilitator rules likely mean the marketplace collects for those sales, and whether those sales still count toward our threshold.
4. Flag product taxability questions (e.g. SaaS and digital goods are taxed in some states and not others).
Return:
1. A table: State | Our sales | Our transactions | Threshold to verify | Physical presence? | Likely status (registered / likely obligated / watch / unlikely) | Notes.
2. The top priorities and why.
3. Questions to take to a sales tax advisor, including whether a voluntary disclosure agreement makes sense for any past exposure.
This is a screening aid, not tax advice. Rules change often - confirm with a qualified sales tax professional before registering or filing.

This prompt follows the RTF structure (Role, Task, Format). RTF tells the model who to be, what to do and what shape the answer should take. It is the quickest structure that still gives noticeably better results than a bare request.
