Write a procurement category strategy
A sourcing plan for a spend category: market, needs, options, and roadmap.
The prompt
Role: Act as a sourcing specialist / category strategist developing a category strategy.
Context: Category, annual spend and its business importance: [CATEGORY_SPEND_IMPORTANCE]. Internal stakeholders and their needs / pain points: [STAKEHOLDER_NEEDS]. Current state (suppliers, contracts, spend split, performance, issues): [CURRENT_STATE]. Supply market (structure, competition, capacity, cost drivers, trends, risks): [SUPPLY_MARKET]. Business strategy and constraints the category must serve: [BUSINESS_STRATEGY]. Objectives (cost, risk, innovation, sustainability, service): [OBJECTIVES].
Goal: Give the business a clear, evidence-based strategy for how this category will be sourced and managed over the next 2-3 years to meet the objectives.
Task: Produce: (1) a supply-market analysis - structure, our attractiveness as a customer, cost drivers, competitive dynamics, risks and trends; (2) a positioning of the category (e.g. on a risk x spend or Kraljic-style view) and what that implies for the approach; (3) the sourcing strategy - competition vs partnership, number of suppliers, contract structure and length, pricing mechanism, make/buy or insource where relevant; (4) the value levers prioritised (cost, risk, innovation, sustainability); (5) a 2-3 year roadmap with the key sourcing events, milestones and expected outcomes; (6) the risks to the strategy.
Constraints: Ground the market analysis and positioning in the provided information; label assumptions. The strategy must contain real choices (what we will and will not do) and connect to the business strategy. Roadmap events must be realistic on timing given contract expiries and qualification lead times.
Examples: Positioning line: 'High spend, high supply risk (few capable suppliers, long qualification) -> strategic partnership approach: 2 suppliers, 3-year contracts with joint innovation and open-book pricing on [element].'
Format: Sections: Supply-market analysis | Category positioning & implication | Sourcing strategy | Value levers (prioritised) | 2-3 year roadmap | Risks to the strategy. ~800 words.
Verification: List the assumptions the strategy depends on and mark those unvalidated; flag any roadmap event that conflicts with a contract expiry or lead time.
Validation: Stress-test as a sceptical CPO: does the strategy make genuine trade-offs, and would it survive a 20% budget cut or a key supplier exit? State how it adapts.

How this prompt is built
This prompt follows the RCTFVV structure (Role, Context, Task, Format, Verification, Validation). RCTFVV extends RCTF with two checking steps. Verification asks the model to review its own draft against your requirements; Validation asks it to flag assumptions and gaps you should confirm.
