Prepare for a productive meeting with my research advisor
Creates a focused agenda and progress update so advisor meetings end with decisions, feedback, and clear next steps.
The prompt
Help me prepare for my next meeting with my research advisor or supervisor.
Meeting length and how often we meet: [e.g. "30 minutes, every 2 weeks"]
Progress since last meeting: [what I did, results, drafts]
What I'm stuck on: [technical, conceptual, writing, motivation]
Decisions I need from them: [e.g. "which analysis to prioritize", "whether to submit to conference X"]
Last meeting's action items: [LIST and status]
Anything delicate: [e.g. "I'm behind schedule", "authorship question", "workload", "considering a different direction"]
Create:
1. A one-paragraph update I can send 24 hours ahead, so the meeting starts with discussion rather than catching up.
2. An agenda ordered by importance, with time per item, putting decisions first.
3. For each stuck point: a short framing of the problem, what I tried, and 2 options I'm considering, so I'm asking for a judgment, not a rescue.
4. Phrasing for any delicate topic that is honest and solution-focused.
5. A template for notes and a follow-up email that confirms decisions and action items with dates.
Keep everything brief; my advisor's time is limited.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.
