Decide whether I'm ready to hire my first employee
Tests whether your workload and cash justify a first hire, and which arrangement fits: part-time, full-time, contractor, or not yet.
The prompt
Help me decide whether to make my first hire, and what kind of hire it should be. This is step 1 of the 'Hire your first employee' pack.
My business: [WHAT I DO, how long I've been running, team today - e.g. "solo bakery owner, 2 years"]
Where my time goes each week: [TASKS and rough hours]
What I'm dropping or doing badly: [EXAMPLES]
Revenue and cash position: [monthly revenue, profit, cash reserve - rough is fine]
What I'd do with the time freed up: [e.g. "sell more", "open on Saturdays"]
Location: [COUNTRY/STATE]
Work through this:
1. Sort my tasks into: only I should do, could hand off with training, could be automated or dropped.
2. Say whether the hand-off work adds up to a real role, and roughly how many hours a week.
3. Compare the options: part-time employee, full-time employee, freelancer/contractor, agency, or no hire yet. For each: cost range, control, commitment, and fit.
4. Flag worker-classification risk: explain in plain terms the general factors that make someone an employee rather than a contractor, and tell me to confirm with my local labor authority or an employment adviser.
5. Check whether my cash can cover about 6 months of the role. Use placeholders like [ADD LOCAL WAGE] where you don't know figures; don't invent wage numbers.
Return:
- A one-paragraph recommendation: hire now, wait, or use a contractor.
- A table comparing the options.
- The role I should hire first, in one sentence.
- If the answer is 'not yet', 3 signals that would tell me it's time.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.
