Prompt meaning: what is a prompt in AI? Parts and examples
What prompt means in AI and in everyday English, how to pronounce it, the parts of a good prompt, the main types of prompts and side-by-side examples.

A prompt is the instruction, question or information you give an AI model such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude to tell it what to produce. The model reads the prompt and generates a response from it, so the prompt is the single biggest factor you control in the quality of the answer. In AI, “prompt” means the input; the output is called the response or completion.
What does prompt mean in English?
Outside AI, “prompt” is an ordinary English word with three uses:
- Adjective: done quickly, without delay. “Thank you for your prompt reply.” A prompt payment is one made on time or early.
- Verb: to cause or encourage someone to do something. “The report prompted a change in policy.” “The app prompts you to save your work.”
- Noun: a cue or reminder. In a theatre, a prompt is the line whispered to an actor who has forgotten it. On a computer, a command prompt is the place where you type a command.
It is pronounced /prɒmpt/ (British) or /prɑːmpt/ (American): one syllable, rhyming with “romped”. The AI meaning grew out of the “cue” sense. Looking for the meaning in Hindi? See Prompt meaning in Hindi (प्रॉम्प्ट का मतलब).
What does prompt mean in AI?
In everyday English a prompt is something that encourages an action, like a cue for an actor. In artificial intelligence the meaning is close: a prompt is the text (and sometimes images or files) you send to a generative AI model to cue its response. A prompt can be as short as “Summarise this article” or as detailed as a full brief describing the role the model should take, your situation, the task and the exact format you want back. Because large language models predict a response from everything in the prompt, a vague prompt gets a generic answer, while a specific prompt with context gets an answer that fits your situation. Writing prompts deliberately to get reliable results is called prompt engineering.
What are the parts of a good prompt?
- Role: who the AI should act as, for example “an experienced recruiter”.
- Context: the background only you know: audience, goal, constraints and source material.
- Task: one clear job, stated with a direct verb such as write, summarise, compare or plan.
- Format: what the answer should look like, such as a table, a 150-word email or five bullet points.
These four parts are the RCTF framework. Simpler requests can drop the context (RTF); high-stakes ones add self-checks (RCTFVV).
What are the main types of prompts?
| Type | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Zero-shot | A direct instruction with no examples | Simple, common requests |
| Few-shot | Includes worked examples of the output you want | Consistent formats and styles |
| Chain-of-thought | Asks the model to reason step by step | Decisions, analysis, multi-step problems |
| Role or system prompt | Sets who the model is and standing rules | Consistent tone and expertise |
| Template prompt | A reusable prompt with blanks to fill in | Tasks you repeat |
| Image prompt | Describes a picture: subject, style, lighting, composition | Image and video tools |
What does a weak prompt look like compared with a strong one?
| Weak prompt | Strong prompt |
|---|---|
| Write an email to my boss. | Act as a professional writer. My manager asked for an update on [PROJECT]. Write a 120-word email that leads with whether we are on track, lists two risks with owners, and ends with the one decision I need from them. |
| Help with my resume. | Act as a recruiter for [ROLE]. Compare my resume below with this job description and list the five changes that would most improve my chances, most important first. Resume: [PASTE]. Job description: [PASTE]. |
The strong versions are longer, but each extra line removes a guess the model would otherwise have to make.
What is the difference between a prompt and a prompt template?
A prompt is the exact text you send. A prompt template is a reusable prompt with blanks, such as [AUDIENCE] or [TOPIC], that you fill in each time. Every prompt in the ThinkWithPrompt library is a template: the structure stays the same and you add your details. If you would rather build one from scratch, use the free prompt generator.
Frequently asked questions
Is a prompt the same as a question?
Not quite. A question is one kind of prompt, but a prompt can also be an instruction (“Rewrite this email”), a template with blanks to fill, or a block of context followed by a task. Anything you send an AI model to tell it what to produce is a prompt.
How long should a prompt be?
Long enough to remove guesswork. A simple rewrite can be one line; a report or plan needs a few lines of context and the source material. Detail about your audience, goal and format improves answers; filler does not.
Do the same prompts work in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude?
Yes. Text prompts work across AI assistants, though answers differ slightly between models. All the prompts in our library are written to work in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
What does prompt mean in Hindi?
In AI, a prompt (प्रॉम्प्ट) is the instruction or question you give the AI. As an everyday English word, prompt means तुरंत or शीघ्र (quick, without delay) as an adjective, and प्रेरित करना (to cause or encourage) as a verb. Read the full explanation in Hindi: Prompt meaning in Hindi.
What is a system prompt?
A system prompt is a set of standing instructions given to an AI model before the conversation starts, such as its role, rules and tone. In chat apps you control something similar through features like custom instructions, Gems or Project instructions.
