Write a litigation status update for leadership
Summarizes where each dispute stands, what changed, exposure, and the decisions needed, in language executives can act on.
The prompt
Write a status update on our disputes for senior leadership.
Audience: [e.g. "CEO and CFO", "board audit committee"]
Matters: [for each: name, opposing party, what it is about, current stage, what happened since last update, next steps and dates, exposure estimate, reserve or accrual if any, outside counsel spend to date and budget]
Decisions I need from them: [LIST, or "none"]
Privilege status of this update: [e.g. "privileged and confidential, prepared at the direction of counsel"]
Requirements:
- Start with a 3-5 line summary: total matters, anything that changed materially, decisions needed.
- Then a table: Matter | Stage | What changed | Next milestone and date | Exposure (range) | Spend vs. budget | Risk trend (up/flat/down).
- For each material matter, one short paragraph in plain English: where it stands, what could go wrong, what we are doing.
- Present exposure as ranges with the basis ("counsel's estimate"), never single-point predictions of outcome.
- Keep facts separate from opinions; no speculation about the other side's motives.
- Include the privilege header I gave and limit distribution to those who need it.
- Under one page plus the table.
Mark any missing figure as [ADD]. Accounting treatment of reserves needs finance and auditor input [CONFIRM WITH FINANCE]. A qualified lawyer must review the update before it is sent.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.
