Write a control plan for a production process
A control plan that turns my product and process characteristics into what to check, how, how often, and what to do when it fails.
The prompt
Help me write a control plan for a production process.
Part and process: [part number/name and the operations in order]
Control plan phase: [prototype / pre-launch / production]
Characteristics to control: [LIST product characteristics (dimensions, appearance, function) and process parameters (temperature, pressure, torque, speed), marking any special or critical ones]
Specifications: [nominal and tolerance for each]
Measurement equipment available: [gauges, CMM, vision system, test stands]
Inputs from the PFMEA: [high-priority risks, or "not done yet"]
Customer requirements: [e.g. IATF 16949, customer-specific SPC or inspection rules, or "none"]
For each operation and characteristic, define:
- Specification and tolerance
- Measurement technique and gauge (flag any gauge without a completed MSA)
- Sample size and frequency (e.g. first-off, 5 pieces per hour, 100%)
- Control method (SPC chart, error-proofing, checklist, first/last piece)
- Reaction plan: stop, contain, segregate suspect parts back to the last good check, notify, and who decides restart
Rules:
- Special and critical characteristics need a stronger control than visual inspection, ideally error-proofing or SPC.
- Every high-priority PFMEA risk must map to at least one control; list any that don't.
- Do not invent tolerances or frequencies I haven't given. Use [CONFIRM] where engineering must decide.
Return a table: Op no. | Process/machine | Characteristic | Product/process | Special char. | Spec/tolerance | Measurement method | Sample size | Frequency | Control method | Reaction plan. Then list gaps and open questions.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.

How this prompt is built
This prompt follows the Few-Shot structure (Few-shot prompting). A few-shot prompt includes one or more worked examples of the input and the output you want, so the model can copy the pattern instead of guessing it.
