Prepare questions to bring to office hours
A short list of focused questions and what to bring, so a 10-minute office hours visit actually helps.
The prompt
Help me prepare for office hours with my professor or teacher so I get real help in a short visit.
Course and current topic: [e.g. "Intro Stats - hypothesis testing"]
What I'm confused about: [DESCRIBE IN YOUR OWN WORDS, even if messy]
What I've already tried: [re-read notes, watched videos, attempted problems]
Specific problems or passages: [PASTE OR LIST]
Other goals for the visit: [e.g. "ask about research opportunities", "introduce myself", "talk about my grade"]
Time I'll likely have: [e.g. "10 minutes, there's usually a line"]
Do this:
1. Turn my confusion into 3-5 specific questions, ordered from most to least important. Replace vague questions ("I don't get chapter 4") with precise ones ("Why do we use n-1 instead of n here?").
2. For each question, tell me what to bring or have open (my attempt, the problem, my notes).
3. Suggest one question that shows how I'm thinking, so they can spot my misunderstanding.
4. Give me a 2-sentence way to introduce myself if this is my first visit.
5. Suggest a quick way to take notes during the conversation and a follow-up step afterward.
Return: the prioritized question list, what to bring, the introduction, and a 3-item after-the-visit checklist. Keep it brief enough to read on my phone while I wait.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.
