Plan the onboarding of a new executive who reports to me
A 90-day onboarding plan for a new senior leader, covering context, relationships, early wins, and check-ins.
The prompt
Help me plan the first 90 days for a new executive joining my leadership team.
Role and start date: [DETAILS]
Why we hired them and what success looks like at 12 months: [OUTCOMES]
What they inherit: [TEAM, open problems, ongoing projects, a predecessor or not]
Key relationships they need: [PEERS, board members, top customers, partners]
Sensitive situations: [e.g. "an internal candidate was passed over", "team morale is low"]
Decisions waiting for them: [LIST]
Build a plan with:
1. Before day 1: documents and data to send, intros to set up, and what I'll tell their new team.
2. Days 1-30 (learn): listening tour list with questions to ask each group, plus the business context only I can give them.
3. Days 31-60 (diagnose): their written assessment of the function and a draft plan, reviewed with me.
4. Days 61-90 (act): 1-2 visible early wins and the first changes they'll make.
5. Decision rights: what they own outright now, what they should consult me on, and when that changes.
6. My check-in schedule and the questions I'll ask at day 30, 60, and 90.
7. Warning signs that onboarding is going off track (e.g. changing too much before understanding, or not changing anything) and how I'd address each.
Also draft a short note I can send to the company announcing their arrival and what they'll own.
