Negotiate the non-salary terms of a job offer
A plan and wording to negotiate title, remote work, start date, time off, and other terms beyond base pay.
The prompt
Help me negotiate the parts of a job offer beyond base salary. This is step 1 of my offer wrap-up; use it after salary talks are done, or on its own if pay is fixed. The agreed terms feed my written acceptance in step 2.
Offer terms received: [PASTE offer letter or summary]
Where salary landed: [e.g. "they moved 5%, said it's final"]
Terms I care about: [e.g. title, remote or hybrid days, start date, vacation, sign-on bonus, relocation, equity vesting, learning budget, review date, severance, non-compete scope]
My situation: [e.g. "need to give 4 weeks' notice", "planned vacation in June", "relocating"]
Steps:
1. Rank my terms by value to me and by how easy they usually are for employers to grant.
2. Suggest a single bundled ask of the top 2-4 items rather than one at a time.
3. Write the request email (under 180 words) and a short verbal version.
4. Explain why each matters in plain terms (e.g. an earlier performance review can mean an earlier raise).
5. Recommend which agreements I should get in writing in the offer letter.
Flag any restrictive clauses I mention (non-compete, non-solicit, IP assignment, repayment of sign-on bonus) and tell me to have them reviewed by an employment lawyer, since enforceability varies by location. This is general information, not legal advice.
