Identify the leading and lagging indicators for my business or team
Sorts your metrics into leading and lagging indicators, links each lead to the outcome it predicts, and fills gaps in early-warning measures.
The prompt
Help me identify the leading and lagging indicators for my business or team.
Business, team, or function: [WHAT WE DO - e.g. "B2B customer success team"]
Outcomes that matter most: [e.g. revenue, retention, margin, customer satisfaction, safety]
Metrics we track today: [PASTE THE LIST or dashboard fields]
How often we review them: [weekly / monthly / quarterly]
Steps:
1. Classify each current metric as lagging (records an outcome after the fact), leading (moves before the outcome and can be influenced now), or neither (activity counts that don't predict anything).
2. For each key outcome, map the chain: which leading indicators should move first, and roughly how far ahead (days, weeks, a quarter). Explain the logic in one line each.
3. Spot outcomes with no leading indicator, and suggest 1-2 measurable ones for each. Say what data source would supply them.
4. Check each leading indicator: can the team influence it, can it be measured often enough, and could it be gamed?
5. Suggest how to confirm a lead really predicts the outcome (e.g. compare past periods, check correlation over 6-12 months).
Return:
1. A table: Metric | Leading or lagging | Outcome it relates to | Typical lead time | Who can influence it | Keep / change / drop.
2. New leading indicators to add, with a definition and data source.
3. A short recommended set: 3-5 leading and 2-3 lagging indicators to review together.
The lead-lag relationships are hypotheses until checked against my own historical data; label them that way.

How this prompt is built
This prompt follows the Few-Shot structure (Few-shot prompting). A few-shot prompt includes one or more worked examples of the input and the output you want, so the model can copy the pattern instead of guessing it.
