Decide whether to approve a discount request
A deal desk review of a discount request that weighs margin, precedent, and give-gets, with an approve, counter, or decline recommendation.
The prompt
Help me review a discount request from a rep.
Deal: [account, products, list price, term, contract value]
Discount requested: [% or amount, and any other concessions such as free months, payment terms, extra seats]
Rep's justification: [competitor pricing, budget limit, strategic logo, end-of-quarter timing]
Our discount policy and approval levels: [paste, or describe]
Margins or cost floor: [if known]
Customer context: [size, growth potential, reference value, renewal history]
Precedent: [what similar customers paid]
Analyze:
1. The real cost of the request over the full contract, including renewal: does this discount reset the price we'll renew at?
2. Whether the justification is evidenced (e.g. a competitor quote) or assumed.
3. Give-gets: what we could ask for in return (longer term, upfront payment, case study, larger commitment, faster signature with a real deadline).
4. Precedent risk: who else would expect this price if it became known?
5. Whether discounting is solving the real problem, or masking a value or qualification gap.
Return:
- A recommendation: Approve / Approve with conditions / Counter / Decline.
- A counter-proposal with 2-3 give-get options and their net value.
- Notes for the rep on how to present the counter to the buyer.
- Any policy gap this request reveals.
Use only the numbers I provide and show all calculations.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.

How this prompt is built
This prompt follows the RTF structure (Role, Task, Format). RTF tells the model who to be, what to do and what shape the answer should take. It is the quickest structure that still gives noticeably better results than a bare request.
