Build a conflict-of-interest search list for a new matter
Turns intake details into a complete list of names to run through conflicts, plus the questions an attorney must resolve before opening the file.
The prompt
Help me run a thorough conflict check for a prospective new matter at my law firm.
Prospective client: [NAME - person or entity, including former names and DBAs]
Matter description: [SHORT SUMMARY, practice area]
Adverse parties: [ALL KNOWN]
Related parties: [parents, subsidiaries, officers, spouses, insurers, guarantors, co-defendants, key witnesses, opposing counsel]
Lateral hires or recently departed lawyers involved: [NAMES - or "none"]
Results of our conflicts database search so far: [PASTE HITS - or "not run yet"]
Do the following:
1. Build a full search list: every name, likely spelling variants, abbreviations, prior names, and corporate family members I should search. Flag any I need to look up, e.g. [CONFIRM parent company].
2. For each hit I have pasted, classify it as: current client directly adverse, former client in a substantially related matter, related-entity issue, positional or business conflict, personal-interest conflict, or no conflict, and explain why.
3. List which hits may be curable by informed written consent and which are likely not consentable, using ABA Model Rules 1.7, 1.9, and 1.10 as a general framework.
4. Flag whether screening a lateral lawyer could matter here.
5. List the follow-up questions the responsible attorney should answer before clearance.
Return: a search-list table (name, relationship to matter, variants), a hit-analysis table, and a clearance recommendation marked as a draft for attorney decision.
Do not invent database results or facts. My state's rules may differ from the Model Rules; the final conflict decision belongs to a licensed attorney at the firm.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.

How this prompt is built
This prompt follows the RTF structure (Role, Task, Format). RTF tells the model who to be, what to do and what shape the answer should take. It is the quickest structure that still gives noticeably better results than a bare request.
