Build a bank of STAR stories for behavioral interviews
8-10 polished stories from your experience, mapped to the competencies interviewers test most often.
The prompt
Help me build a bank of interview stories using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). This is step 2 of my interview prep; if you have the company briefing from step 1, prioritize the competencies that role needs.
Target role: [TITLE]
Competencies the job emphasizes: [from the job description - e.g. ownership, collaboration, handling ambiguity]
Raw experiences: [LIST 8-12 situations in rough notes - projects, conflicts, failures, wins]
Steps:
1. Turn each experience into a STAR story of 150-200 words (about 90 seconds spoken). Put most of the length into Action, focusing on what I did and why.
2. End each with a measurable result. If I gave none, add [ADD RESULT] - don't invent one.
3. Add a one-line "lesson learned" for failure or conflict stories.
4. Map each story to the questions it can answer, so one story covers several prompts.
Cover at least: a failure, a conflict with a colleague, influencing without authority, a tough deadline, a mistake I owned, leading something, a decision with incomplete data, and handling feedback.
Return:
- The stories, each with a short memorable title.
- A matrix: Common question | Best story | Backup story.
- Gaps where I need a new example.
- Two follow-up questions an interviewer might ask on each story, so I'm ready to go deeper.

How this prompt is built
This prompt follows the RTF structure (Role, Task, Format). RTF tells the model who to be, what to do and what shape the answer should take. It is the quickest structure that still gives noticeably better results than a bare request.
