Write my teaching philosophy statement
A concrete, evidence-backed teaching statement for academic job applications, promotion, or awards, in your own voice.
The prompt
Help me write my teaching philosophy statement.
What it's for: [e.g. "faculty job applications at teaching-focused colleges", "tenure dossier", "teaching award"]
Length: [e.g. "1-2 pages, single spaced"]
My field and courses taught: [LIST, with levels and class sizes]
My core beliefs about learning: [2-4 beliefs in my own words, however rough]
Specific practices I use: [e.g. "weekly low-stakes quizzes", "community-based projects", "specs grading"]
Evidence of impact: [student feedback quotes, outcomes, peer observations, changes I made based on data]
Inclusive teaching practices: [what I actually do]
A moment that shaped my teaching: [optional]
Write a statement that:
1. Opens with a specific classroom moment or a clear claim, not a quote or a cliche ("Teaching is a journey").
2. Organizes around 3 beliefs. For each: the belief, the practice it leads to in my courses, a concrete example, and evidence it works.
3. Includes how I assess learning and how I improve my teaching over time.
4. Shows how I support students from different backgrounds with specific practices, not general statements.
5. Ends with goals or courses I'd like to teach, tailored to the purpose I named.
Rules: first person, my voice, field-specific examples. Use only the evidence I give; mark gaps [ADD EXAMPLE]. Then list 3 sentences a search committee would find generic, with sharper rewrites.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.
