Write a repair request to my landlord
A clear, polite, and documented repair request that gets action, plus a follow-up if nothing happens.
The prompt
Help me write a repair request to my landlord or property manager.
Problem: [e.g. "no hot water", "leak under the kitchen sink", "broken window lock", "mold in bathroom"]
When it started and how it affects me: [DATE, impact on daily life, health, or safety]
What I've already done: [e.g. "texted on May 3, no reply", "put a bucket under the leak"]
How I'll send it: [email / tenant portal / letter / text]
Lease terms on repairs (optional): [PASTE CLAUSE]
Location: [CITY/STATE - tenant rights vary]
Write:
1. A short, polite, factual request: the problem, when it started, its impact, what I'm asking for, and a reasonable date for a response. Offer access times. Keep it calm and specific.
2. A list of what to document: dated photos or video, copies of all messages, and any costs.
3. A firmer follow-up message if there's no response by my date, still professional.
4. General information on next steps if repairs aren't made (e.g. contacting a local housing or code enforcement office), and a reminder not to withhold rent or make deductions without checking my local law and lease first.
If the problem is urgent or dangerous - gas smell, sparking or burning smell from outlets, flooding, no heat in freezing weather, sewage - tell me to contact the landlord's emergency line or emergency services immediately, not wait for email. This is general information, not legal advice; for a dispute, contact a tenant-rights organization or legal aid.
