Store, freeze, and use up leftovers safely
Clear guidance on how long your leftovers last, how to freeze and reheat them, and meals to repurpose them into.
The prompt
Help me handle leftovers and food storage safely.
What I have: [LIST - e.g. "roast chicken from Sunday", "cooked rice", "half a pot of chili", "opened jar of pasta sauce"]
When each was cooked or opened: [DATES]
How it was stored: [e.g. "left out overnight", "in the fridge in the pot", "covered container"]
Fridge and freezer space: [ROOMY / TIGHT]
Who's eating: [note anyone pregnant, very young, older, or with a weakened immune system]
For each item, give me:
1. Keep, freeze, or throw out, with the reason. Use general guidance from food-safety authorities (e.g. most cooked leftovers about 3-4 days in the fridge; perishables shouldn't sit at room temperature more than 2 hours) and say when I should check official guidance for my country.
2. How to cool, package, and label it for the freezer, and how long it keeps its quality.
3. How to thaw and reheat it safely (reheat to 165°F / 74°C; reheat rice only once).
4. One or two "makeover" meal ideas so it actually gets eaten.
Then give me a simple labeling system and a fridge layout tip. Be extra cautious for higher-risk people I mentioned. When in doubt, the answer is "throw it out" - never suggest smelling or tasting food to check if it's safe.
