Run a fun story-writing activity with my kids
A playful, age-right activity plan that helps children invent and write (or tell) their own stories.
The prompt
Plan a story-writing activity I can do with my kids.
Kids' ages: [e.g. "5 and 9"]
Their reading and writing level: [e.g. "younger one can't write yet", "older one loves comics"]
What they're into: [e.g. "dinosaurs, soccer, space, our cat"]
Time available: [e.g. "45 minutes on a rainy Saturday", "10 minutes at bedtime"]
Materials we have: [e.g. "paper, crayons, a phone for recording"]
Setting: [home / car trip / classroom / party]
Give me:
1. A warm-up game (5 minutes) to get ideas flowing, e.g. story dice made from household objects or "what if" questions.
2. A simple story structure suited to their ages (e.g. someone wants something, something gets in the way, how it ends), explained in kid words.
3. The main activity, step by step, with a role for each child so the younger one can draw, act, or dictate while the older one writes.
4. 10 story starters based on their interests.
5. A way to "publish" the result (fold a mini-book, record it as a radio show, act it out).
6. Tips for me: how to help without taking over, praising effort and ideas over spelling, and what to do if one child gets frustrated.
Keep everything screen-light, low-cost, and focused on fun.
