Prepare for a social event when I feel anxious
A practical plan to manage nerves before, during, and after a social event, with coping tools and an exit strategy.
The prompt
Help me get ready for a social event that makes me anxious.
The event: [e.g. "office party", "meeting my partner's friends", "class reunion"]
When and how long: [DATE, LENGTH]
Who I'll know there: [NAMES OR "no one"]
What specifically worries me: [e.g. "standing alone", "saying something awkward", "blushing", "leaving too early"]
What has helped me before: [ANYTHING]
Give me:
1. Before: a short prep routine for the day of (what to wear, eat, and do), plus 2-3 ways to make arrival easier (e.g. arriving early when groups are small, coming with someone, having a small job to do).
2. During: quick calming techniques I can do unnoticed (breathing, grounding), simple roles that make it easier (offering drinks, asking about the host), and what to do if I freeze.
3. A realistic goal: e.g. "stay 45 minutes and talk to 2 people," and permission to leave after.
4. An exit plan: polite ways to leave.
5. After: a balanced way to review the night instead of replaying awkward moments.
6. A gentle reality check on the thoughts I listed: what is likely vs. feared.
If social anxiety is stopping me from work, school, or things I want to do, or comes with panic attacks, suggest talking to a doctor or therapist; it's common and very treatable.
