Plan website personalization for different visitor segments
A segment-by-segment plan of what each visitor group sees on your site, how to detect them, and how to test whether it works.
The prompt
Help me plan personalized website experiences for different visitor segments.
Website type and goal: [e.g. B2B SaaS site - demo requests; online store - purchases]
Segments I'm considering: [e.g. new vs. returning, industry, location, traffic source, customers vs. prospects]
Data I have about visitors: [analytics, CRM, logged-in data, UTM parameters, IP-based location]
Tools available: [CMS, personalization or testing tool, email platform]
Traffic levels: [monthly visitors overall and roughly per segment]
For each segment, give:
- How to identify it reliably, and what happens when we can't.
- What it needs most at this stage and the main objection to address.
- What changes on the site: headline, hero image, proof (case studies, reviews), offers, navigation shortcuts, calls to action.
- The pages where personalization matters most.
- The metric that tells us it worked.
Then:
1. Rank segments by expected impact vs. effort, and recommend which 1-2 to start with.
2. Note where traffic is too small to test reliably.
3. A test plan: control vs. personalized, success metric, and minimum run time.
4. Privacy and consent checks: what data requires consent where my visitors are, avoiding sensitive categories, and not making personalization feel intrusive.
5. A default experience that works well for anyone who doesn't match a segment.
Keep it practical for a small team; flag anything that needs a developer.
