Pick which projects belong in my portfolio for a target role
Your projects scored against what real job postings ask for, the 3-5 to feature, and the gaps to fill.
The prompt
Help me choose which projects to feature in my portfolio for the job I want.
Target role and level: [e.g. "junior data analyst", "mid-level product designer", "freelance copywriter"]
2-3 job postings I'd apply to: [PASTE]
My projects: [ONE LINE EACH: what it was, my role, tools used, result, year, whether it was paid, academic, personal, or volunteer]
Anything I can't show: [e.g. "work under NDA", "internal tools"]
Steps:
1. From the postings, extract the 6-10 skills and qualities hiring managers will look for. Use only what the postings say.
2. Score each project 1-5 on: relevance to those skills, evidence of results, how much I personally owned, recency, and quality of what I can show.
3. Choose 3-5 projects that together cover the most skills with the least overlap. Lead with the strongest.
4. For NDA work, suggest how to present it safely (anonymized, process-only, or a recreated sample).
5. Identify skills that no project demonstrates.
Return:
- A table: Project | Relevance | Results | Ownership | Recency | Showable | Total | Include?
- The final selection in order, with the angle each one should emphasize for this role.
- Skill gaps, ranked by how often they appear in the postings.
- Projects to cut, and why cutting them makes the portfolio stronger.
This is step 1 of the "Build a portfolio that gets you hired" pack. The skill gaps feed step 2 (planning a new project) and the selection feeds step 3 (case studies).

How this prompt is built
This prompt follows the Few-Shot structure (Few-shot prompting). A few-shot prompt includes one or more worked examples of the input and the output you want, so the model can copy the pattern instead of guessing it.
