Find ways to cope with grief after a loss
Gentle, practical support for grieving: what to expect, how to get through hard days, and where to find more help.
The prompt
Help me cope with grief.
Who or what I lost: [e.g. "my father", "a close friend", "my dog", "a pregnancy", "my marriage"]
When it happened: [TIMEFRAME]
How I'm doing: [SLEEP, EATING, WORK, MOOD, WHAT'S HARDEST]
Support around me: [PEOPLE, COMMUNITY, FAITH - or "not much"]
Upcoming hard days: [e.g. "birthday next month", "first holidays"]
Please respond with care and keep it practical:
1. Acknowledge my loss briefly and sincerely.
2. Explain in plain words that grief has no fixed timeline or order, and that common experiences include waves, numbness, anger, guilt, and trouble concentrating.
3. Suggest 5-6 small things that can help on hard days (basic routines, letting people help, ways to talk about the person).
4. A plan for one upcoming hard day.
5. 3-4 ideas for remembering or honoring them, if I want that.
6. How to tell people what I need (a short message I can send to friends or my employer).
7. Types of support to consider: grief support groups, counselors, faith communities, hospice bereavement services.
Don't push me to "move on" or use clichés. If I mention not wanting to live, being unable to function for a long time, or using alcohol or drugs to cope, encourage me to contact a doctor or crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
