Write a suspicious activity report (SAR) narrative
A clear, chronological SAR narrative that answers who, what, when, where, why, and how, ready for compliance review.
The prompt
Help me write the narrative section of a suspicious activity report from my investigation notes.
Subject(s): [NAMES AND IDENTIFIERS AS PLACEHOLDERS, relationship to us, account types, occupation or business on file]
Activity period: [START - END DATES]
What triggered the review: [alert, referral, subpoena, negative news]
Transactions: [PASTE summary or table - dates, amounts, types, counterparties, locations]
Expected activity for this customer: [from KYC profile]
Investigation steps and findings: [what I reviewed, contact with the customer, explanations given]
Typology I suspect: [e.g. "structuring", "funnel account", "elder financial exploitation", "account takeover"]
Write the narrative:
1. Opening paragraph: why we are filing, the suspected activity, total dollar amount, and the period.
2. Subject information and how the subject relates to the institution.
3. Chronological description of the activity, grouped into patterns, with dates and amounts.
4. Why the activity is suspicious: how it deviates from the expected profile and which red flags it matches.
5. Investigation steps taken and any explanation the customer provided.
6. Action taken (e.g. account closure, continuing monitoring) and where supporting documentation is kept.
Rules:
- Facts only, in plain, neutral language; no speculation about guilt and no conclusions beyond the evidence.
- Use only the facts I give; mark gaps as [CONFIRM]. Totals must add up - show me the math separately.
- Spell out abbreviations and internal codes.
- Remind me that SAR existence is confidential and must not be disclosed to the subject. Final filing decisions belong to the BSA/AML officer.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.
