Turn one assignment into three tiers for different readiness levels
Rewrites a single task into supported, on-level, and extension versions that all hit the same learning goal.
The prompt
Help me differentiate one assignment into three tiers so every student works on the same goal at the right level of challenge.
The original assignment: [PASTE IT]
Learning goal everyone must reach: [e.g. "compare two fractions with unlike denominators and justify"]
Grade level: [GRADE]
Who is in the room: [e.g. "6 students below grade level in reading, 4 ready for extension, 2 with IEP accommodations for chunked tasks"] (no names)
Time available: [MINUTES]
Create:
1. Tier 1 (supported): same goal, with scaffolds such as worked examples, sentence frames, visuals, fewer steps per chunk, or manipulatives. Do not lower the goal itself.
2. Tier 2 (on level): the core task, tightened if needed.
3. Tier 3 (extension): more depth or complexity (transfer, justification, open-ended), not just more problems.
For each tier, give the student-facing instructions and the materials needed.
Then add:
- How to assign tiers quickly (e.g. a 3-question pre-check) and let students move between tiers.
- A shared closing activity where all tiers come back together.
- One way to make the tiers not look ranked to students (neutral names, choice boards).
Check that all three versions can be assessed against the same success criteria, and list those criteria at the end.
Highlighted [brackets] are blanks to replace with your own details.

How this prompt is built
This prompt follows the Few-Shot structure (Few-shot prompting). A few-shot prompt includes one or more worked examples of the input and the output you want, so the model can copy the pattern instead of guessing it.
