Organize my financial documents so my family could find them
A checklist and simple system to organize accounts, policies, and key papers so a trusted person could step in if needed.
The prompt
Help me organize my important financial information so a trusted person could manage things if I couldn't.
Household: [e.g. "single", "married with two kids", "caring for an aging parent"]
Types of accounts and obligations I have: [bank accounts, retirement accounts, loans, credit cards, insurance policies, property, recurring bills, digital accounts - list types only, no numbers or passwords]
What I already have in place: [will, power of attorney, beneficiaries named, none]
Who I'd want to have access: [RELATIONSHIP, e.g. "my spouse", "my adult daughter"]
Preferred format: [paper binder / digital folder / both]
Give me:
1. A master checklist grouped by: identity documents, bank and savings, retirement and investments, debts, insurance, home and vehicles, income and benefits, bills and subscriptions, digital accounts, legal documents, and key contacts (advisor, accountant, lawyer, employer HR).
2. A one-page template for each account type with fields to fill in (institution, account type, how to contact, where statements are) - with a note never to write full account numbers or passwords on it, and to use a password manager's emergency access feature or a secure place instead.
3. How to store it safely and tell my trusted person where it is.
4. A list of gaps to look into, such as beneficiaries to check or a will, framed as questions for a qualified estate planning professional.
5. A once-a-year review reminder.
Keep it calm and practical. This is general organizing guidance, not legal advice.
